The 58th session of the Commission on Narcotics Drugs, the governing body of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime is focusing on global efforts to tackle the world drug problem.

The UNODC’s executive director said the crisis should be addressed through effective and increased international cooperation.
Representing the leading country in the fight against drug trafficking, the Iranian Interior Minister warned the production of opiates is increasing. One of the reasons for this, he said was the adoption of a selective and politically-motivated approach.

Iran has spent billions of dollars to prevent the transit of narcotic drugs from its borders. It’s lost around 4,000 police officers and soldiers to do so. We asked Iran’s Interior Minister whether the country was getting adequate support from the international community.

Rahmani Fazli said Iran expects realistic, logical and objective cooperation from the world.

Iran has been working separately with neighbors Afghanistan and Pakistan as part of a so-called Triangular Initiative. The sides met briefly on the sidelines of the session after which a bilateral meeting was held between Rahmani Fazli and the UNODC’s Executive Director.

In a recent trip to Tehran, Fedotov acknowledged Iran’s huge efforts in the seizure of illicit drugs. Iran maintains despite promises of international aid it’s still fighting this global crisis on its own. Homa Lezgee, Press TV, Vienna.
